FROM DISCOVERY TO RECOVERY
Monitor Backlinks and Recover from a Penguin Penalty or Unnatural Links Penalty.
After over a decade of helping thousands of websites recover from manual and algorithmic penalties imposed by Google, we have made the difficult decision to shut down Remove’em. This tool has been a vital resource for businesses navigating the challenges of harmful backlinks, offering practical solutions during an era of significant changes in the SEO landscape. As we retire Remove’em, we want to take this opportunity to reflect on its impact, legacy, and the journey we shared with our users.
The Impact of Google Penguin and Link Spam Updates on SEO
The introduction of Google’s Penguin update in April 2012 marked a turning point in how search engines assessed backlinks and webspam. Before Penguin, many websites relied on manipulative link-building strategies—acquiring low-quality, irrelevant, or paid backlinks—to artificially inflate their rankings. Penguin disrupted these practices by penalizing sites with spammy link profiles, favoring those with genuine, authoritative backlinks.
How the Penguin Update Changed the Game
Penguin primarily focused on combating:
- Low-quality backlinks: Links from irrelevant or spammy websites.
- Over-optimized anchor text: Excessive use of keyword-rich anchors.
- Paid link schemes: Attempts to manipulate rankings through purchased links.
This update incentivized businesses to prioritize high-quality content and ethical link-building practices. Websites with unnatural link profiles were penalized, resulting in significant ranking drops. For many, cleaning up their backlink profiles became crucial to recovering lost visibility.

Remove’em was developed during this transformative period to address these challenges head-on. Automating backlink analysis, outreach, and disavow management, gave website owners the tools to navigate these new realities with confidence.
Continuous Evolution of Link Spam Detection
Google didn’t stop with Penguin. Over the years, the algorithm evolved, incorporating machine learning to improve its accuracy in detecting manipulative tactics. Updates became more integrated into Google’s core systems, ensuring continuous scrutiny of backlink profiles.
In June 2024, Google introduced an update to its link spam detection algorithm, further refining its ability to identify and discount spammy links. This update:
- Strengthened Google’s ability to neutralize the impact of unnatural links.
- Focused on improving the detection of manipulative patterns, even in more complex link-building strategies.
- Signaled the need for ongoing diligence in maintaining a clean and authoritative backlink profile.
Remove’em evolved alongside these updates, ensuring its features remained relevant and effective in the face of increasingly sophisticated algorithms.
The SEO Landscape Today
With these updates, the SEO landscape has shifted toward prioritizing quality over quantity in link-building. Businesses must focus on earning organic, authoritative links through meaningful partnerships, valuable content, and transparent practices. The days of quick-fix link schemes are gone, replaced by a more sustainable and user-focused approach to SEO.
Remove’em played a critical role in helping thousands of websites adapt to these changes. By offering practical tools to identify and manage harmful backlinks, it empowered businesses to maintain compliance with evolving standards and safeguard their search rankings.
What Was Remove’em & How Did it Work?
Remove’em was designed to address one of the most significant challenges in SEO: harmful backlinks. These links, often resulting from outdated practices or malicious attacks, could lead to search engine penalties, severely impacting a website’s performance.
The tool simplified the process of cleaning up backlink profiles by:
- Identifying harmful links through advanced analysis.
- Providing contact details for webmasters to request link removals.
- Generating and managing disavow files for submission to Google.
By automating these processes, Remove’em saved countless hours and helped users regain control over their search rankings.
Features of Remove’em
Remove’em had many features that made the penalty recovery workflow as seamless as possible. When it was first developed, Remove’em had very basic features: Remove’em would scrape websites for contact information, find contact information through WhoIs, and validate whether the backlinks existed on the websites where we could source backlink data through APIs.
As the years progressed, and we got lots of feedback from our internal team and external users, we added a bevy of features that further augmented the workflow and made the tool one of the best in the industry for penalty remediation and backlink removal. Here’s a comprehensive list of those features:
R-Score: Comparative Anchor Text Analysis
R-Score primarily used anchor text matching and comparison to determine which anchor text phrases are used the most and, in turn, determine which phrases have been over-optimized. Anchor text over-optimization refers to a particular anchor phrase being used an inordinate (unnatural) amount of times to link back to a website. Through this tool, and others that were similar such as SEMRush’s Toxicity Score and Moz’s Spam Score, automated backlink analysis had its flaws, but giving a starting point by which to analyze the quality of a backlink would give webmasters an understanding of backlink quality according to our own qualifiers.
Email Validation
Before your contact email is sent, our third-party email validation service will check the email address against various checks to ensure the maximum deliverability of your link removal email.
Multiple Link Data Sources
One of our best features are the integrated APIs from Moz’s Open Site Explorer and AHREFS to ensure that you have the most backlink data as possible. You can also integrate Majestic OpenApps data into your Remove’em account if you have your own Majestic account.
Domain-Level Work-Flow
Remove’em’s Work-Flow feature allowed users to take control of their own backlink profiles. It guided them through the steps of analyzing links, determining which ones were Good or Bad at the domain level, making the entire link analysis and removal process much easier. After analyzing the links, users could contact domains directly using the contact information Remove’em identified for their accounts. They could even integrate their own SMTP information to easily send emails.
Disavow File and Spreadsheet Exports
Remove’em was set up to make every step of a Penguin penalty recovery much easier. Users could export their own disavow files to upload to their Google Search Console accounts. They were also provided with the ability to download spreadsheets to demonstrate to Google the work they had done to lift a manual penalty. These spreadsheets included contact dates, contact counts, notes, link statuses, R-scores, and a host of other metrics that significantly bolstered reconsideration requests.
Several Email Templates to Choose From
Remove’em provided several link removal email templates that were rigorously tested by our full-service link removal team. Users could also contact our support team to request custom templates.
Nightly Link Checking
Every night, the links in user accounts were checked by Remove’em. The tool manually crawled the page (URL) stored in its system, searched the page for the link, anchor text, no-follow attribute, and page status code, and returned the results to the tool to be displayed in the Remove’em interface.
Pricing Structure for Remove’em
Remove’em was built with flexibility, offering options for small businesses and larger organizations. Our pricing tiers included:
